I am a wood-wright native to Seattle in the Pacific Northwest. I was trained and have a degree as a boat builder from Seattle Central Community College's Wood Technology Program. I then spent a decade honing my woodworking skills on local boats and at a cabinet and furniture shop. Now I craft custom furniture, residential cabinets, architectural woodwork and functional objets 'd art of wood from my shop on the Olympic Peninsula just outside of Sequim, WA.
My design philosophy centers around the merging of utility and practicality with eye-catching forms referenced from historical furniture, as well as from Nature. I appreciate the beauty of wood in its natural state and seek to showcase that beauty. I’m drawn to the translucent nature of the medium in which I work; the way that the grain in a given piece of wood can glow as if it had a light of its own. I love the texture possibilities wood presents. Wood’s capacity to carry a silky smooth and highly polished finish and the rough and ready natural state it possesses captures my imagination. My designs frequently incorporate knot holes, spalting from fungi, live edges or other imperfections. I seek to celebrate these perceived defects as unique design elements.
My work is deeply rooted in craftsmanship and attention to details; I hope these inveterate principles allow my work to rise above simple functionality and to reach an elevated form of aesthetic expression.
My work has been exhibited regionally, including the Northwest Woodworkers Gallery.
